“One of the most misunderstood verses in the Bible today is Ephesians 5:18b “be filled with the Spirit”. It is so often completely ripped out from its’ context to mean falling over laughing, speaking in ecstatic babble, having joy and waving arms in a worship service only to be down in the dumps again the next day. In fact at one church I used to attend, the Pastor at the end of the service after nobody responded to his altar call would sometimes ask the congregation: “If anyone would like a fresh filling of the Spirit then raise your hand.” But none of that is what it means or is the means of attaining it.

The Bible does not just tell us to be “filled with the Spirit” but it also clearly tells us how. We simply have to just read the surrounding context instead of picking out a mere five words.

Another misconception is that we are to wait for God to fill us with the Spirit. But notice the text does not tell us to wait for a filling of the Spirit, but rather we are to “be filled”, this is simply how a Christian should live.
