For many professing Christians, election time is a period when sound theology and Biblical principals are thrown out of the window. Too many decide to vote for a candidate or political party based on carnal reasons, and then scramble through the Bible looking for verses (no matter how far out of context) to support their choice and ignoring any that command them not to.It's one thing to submit to a tyrannical leader, but another to actually vote them into office and in doing so give your vote of support to their policies.
"Faith without works is dead". Our actions reveal what we really believe. For instance, if someone says they are pro-life, but are willing to vote for a candidate who is not, then it is just empty talk.
The Bible is not silent on the issue of choosing candidates. Here Doug Phillips and Scott Brown from the excellent Vision Forum discuss the Biblical principals when choosing a candidate. Vote For Your Conscience mp3. (23 min Click blue link to play or right-click/Save-as to download).
Some points made in the show are:
1. Idealist pragmatism (picking the best of the bad, the less of two evils) is unbiblical.
2. The Bible instructs us on this and is not vague.
3. The three leading candidates in the U.S. election are disqualified from office.
4. The first principal of government is the preservation of innocent life. No Christian should vote for a candidate who is pro-abortion.
5. When a woman rules a nation it is a judgement from God.
Isa 3:12 "My people—infants are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, your guides mislead you and they have swallowed up the course of your paths."
2 Sam 23:3 "The God of Israel has spoken;
the Rock of Israel has said to me:
When one rules justly over men, [Note justly to Biblical standards not worldly]
ruling in the fear of God"
2 Chron 19:6-7 "and said to the judges, “Consider what you do, for you judge not for man but for the Lord. He is with you in giving judgment. Now then, let the fear of the Lord be upon you. Be careful what you do, for there is no injustice with the Lord our God, or partiality or taking bribes.”
Deut 1:13 "Choose for your tribes wise, understanding, and experienced men, and I will appoint them as your heads.’" [Note Biblical wisdom is not worldly wisdom].
