Sound Doctrine; Sound Words #7 of 7 (Phil Johnson)

5 min

Watch/Listen to the full sermon HERE.

John Owen: "Forsake not the assembling"

"By God's all-wise appointment, our assemblies are the food and the nourishment of our souls. It is the main way whereby we publicly identify with Christ and His Gospel. We evidence our love for Christ by our loyalty and support of one another in opposition to all false worship. Many things will rise up in competition to the diligent attendance of our assemblies. We must recognize and refuse to give into anything that is opposed to what Christ commands. The total falling away of a graceless professor always begins with this neglect, this disassociation with God's people."~John Owen.

Principles For Prayer pt 5-Really Trusting In God's Care, Rather Than Saying We Do & Doing The Opposite -Kevin Williams

Quote from this sermon:
"When we don’t fully trust in God to take care of us, what we're doing, we're announcing to the world that God doesn’t take care of us, and that is a bad witness. That is blasphemy. And Jesus said, “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal” and you have Christians with all sorts of life assurance, and rainy day funds, and huge savings accounts. There are churches with thousands and thousands of pounds just sitting in the bank for a rainy day. I mean, not only is that a direct violation of Jesus’ command. But what they are really saying there is “But Lord, we don’t really trust you to take care of us. And so we have to take action ourselves, just in case your shepherding is not up to scratch sometime in the future.” And they wonder why the Spirit of God doesn’t come down.

I mean, it amazes me, that people read, these radical instructions of Jesus. I mean they are radical. And then they turn to the Book of Acts, and what do you find in the Book of Acts? You find people being wise men who built their house upon the rock, and putting these sayings and radical teachings of Jesus into action. In Acts 2:44 it says "And all that believed were together, and had all things common; and sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need." And people read that today, and then they look at their big extravagant houses, and their big cars, and their big salaries and their big extravagant lifestyles, and then say, “Oh that was just for then. Acts is a transitional phase, it’s not for today." They say “They wasn’t commanded to do that, they just gave willingly out of their own hearts.” Yes, they gave cheerfully from their hearts, and believed Jesus’ radical teachings, they took them, His teachings at face value, and put them into action, because that’s what converted hearts do".

Evangelism In The New Testament-Jon Speed -Book Recommendation

Jon Speed has written an excellent booklet Evangelism In The New Testament, which in just over 40 pages (it takes less than an hour to read), he shows that confrontational evangelism is by far the predominant form of evangelism in the New Testament, and that what we call friendship/relationship evangelism provides only a tiny minority. This 'must-read' booklet uncovers the reality that most of what is deemed as evangelism in the church today, is more akin to unbiblical seeker-sensitive church growth programs, than to the Bible. The booklet also shows that the pattern the New Testament gives for evangelism is that every Christian should be involved.

OTHERS MAY, YOU CANNOT

You may have heard Paul Washer mention a tract he was once sent by Leonard Ravenhill. Well you can read it below:

OTHERS MAY, YOU CANNOT by G. D. Watson.

If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
(Matthew 16:24-25)

If God has called you to be truly like Jesus in all your spirit, He will draw you into a life of crucifixion and humility. He will put on you such demands of obedience that you will not be allowed to follow other Christians. In many ways, He seems to let other good people do things which He will not let you do.

Others who seem to be very religious and useful may push themselves, pull wires, and scheme to carry out their plans, but you cannot. If you attempt it, you will meet with such failure and rebuke from the Lord as to make you sorely penitent.

Others can brag about themselves, their work, their successes, their writings, but the Holy Spirit will not allow you to do any such thing. If you begin to do so, He will lead you into some deep mortification that will make you despise yourself and all your good works.

Others will be allowed to succeed in making great sums of money, or having a legacy left to them, or in having luxuries, but God may supply you only on a day-to-day basis, because He wants you to have something far better than gold, a helpless dependence on Him and His unseen treasury.

The Lord may let others be honored and put forward while keeping you hidden in obscurity because He wants to produce some choice, fragrant fruit for His coming glory, which can only be produced in the shade.

God may let others be great, but keep you small. He will let others do a work for Him and get the credit, but He will make you work and toil without knowing how much you are doing. Then, to make your work still more precious, He will let others get the credit for the work which you have done; this to teach you the message of the Cross, humility, and something of the value of being cloaked with His nature.

The Holy Spirit will put a strict watch on you, and with a jealous love rebuke you for careless words and feelings, or for wasting your time, which other Christians never seem distressed over.

So make up your mind that God is an infinite Sovereign and has a right to do as He pleases with His own, and that He may not explain to you a thousand things which may puzzle your reason in His dealings with you.

God will take you at your word. If you absolutely sell yourself to be His slave, He will wrap you up in a jealous love and let other people say and do many things that you cannot. Settle it forever; you are to deal directly with the Holy Spirit, He is to have the privilege of tying your tongue or chaining your hand or closing your eyes in ways which others are not dealt with. However, know this great secret of the Kingdom: When you are so completely possessed with the Living God that you are, in your secret heart, pleased and delighted over this peculiar, personal, private, jealous guardianship and management of the Holy Spirit over your life, you will have found the vestibule of heaven, the high calling of God.

By G.D. Watson

If You Can't Find A Good Church Where You Live, Then Why Not Move Near One?

Because of widespread apostasy today, many Christians struggle to find a Biblical church. If you are in that situation, have you ever thought of moving house to live near a good church? It may mean a less well paid job, or smaller house (or it may not), but are you seeking the Kingdom of God first? Or are you seeking your best life now? What is dictating your decisions in this regard? Money and a career, or, the Kingdom? Here in this 10 minute video clip Tim Conway presses the importance of seeking the Kingdom of God first.

If Your Church Is Liberal/Apostate Then It's Time To Leave

Many "churches" even of those who use the name evangelical are simply apostate and a sin to be in.

Here are 7 reasons to leave a "church" (obviously there are more):

1. It's an Anglican High church, or a church that does any of these things: bows to windows or statues, calls their Pastor Father, prays to Mary, Saints or Angels. 1 Cor 5:11

2. The Bible is not preached. A congregation is not fed with only a 15-20 minute sermon each week. Nor is it fed on man-centred sermons 2 Tim 4:2-4.

3. The church does not practice church discipline and so allows things like adultery, sexual immorality, and drunkeness. 1 Cor 5:11

4. The church allows professing Christians to dress imodestly and sensual. i.e. woman wearing low cut tops. 1 Tim 2:9.

5. The Pastor believes in evolution, or doesn't believe any part of the Bible, and is so obviously not even saved. 2 Tim 3:16-17.

6. The leadership do not believe in, take part in, or encourage evangelism. Mark 16:15.

7. The Church denies Lordship Salvation, practices easy-believism, or believes in the continously carnal Christian Matt 10:38.

In this 26 min radio show Kevin Swanson looks at when it's time to leave a church.

Principles For Prayer pt 4-Doing The Will Of God In Everything-Kevin Williams

We take a look at God's will for us as we continue to look at the Lord's prayer and in this sermon we look at:
-How knowing God's will, but not doing it only makes Hell hotter.
-The Importance of giving up on your old life.
-How every Christian should be involved in evangelism.
-We should give our best to God and put Him first.
-That those who are not spending their money for the Kingdom are not going to the Heaven, because how you spend your money reveals where your heart is.
-Christians should be helping the poor and needy.
-Children should be in the church meeting.
-A disobedient child is the sign of a lost child.
-A moaning Christian is a bad witness.
-When people are apathetic about singing praises to God, it's because they don't believe He's worth it.

Blessings of George Muller Today

Geroge Muller has greatly influenced and blessed my own life, and I recently received this email from a sister:

Hello, I just read the post of 7 Feb, 2008 on George Mueller telling of his faith & of his assertation that, "In answer to my prayers, thousands of souls have been saved, " he went on. "I shall meet tens of thousands of them in Heaven." I just want to say that our prayers & work for the Lord may be more far reaching than any of us could ever imagine. My great-grandmother was orphaned & placed in George Mueller's care when she was 8 in 1854. Her sister was taken in by an aunt who felt she couldn't care for both girls. Mary Ann received a careful Christian upbringing in the orphanage, she was a godly women and raised godly children. To this day I feel that dear man's prayers have been a blessing in my family. My own two daughters have confessed the Lord & it is a blessing beyond price, a truly precious heritage. Mary Ann's sister did not have this blessing although she was more blessed with worldly goods. When my grandmother met her in 1920, she was a wealthy, proud & cold woman with no apparent love for the Lord. God's ways are indeed not our ways!

I love to share this with people, it is often an encouragement to me.

Calvinism Without Holiness Hardens Others-John Bunyan

"O soul, consider this deeply: it is the life of a Christian that carries more conviction and persuasion than his words. Though, like an angel, you talk of Christ, of the gospel, of the doctrines of grace, and of heaven; yet, if you indulge devilish tempers, and live under the power of any sinful lusts and passions, you will hereby harden others against the things of God and prevent their setting out in the ways of God. Study and pray to be a consistent walker in the ways of holiness; else, all is but windy profession and airy talk. O how much harm is done to Christ's cause by the unholy walk of many professors!"~John Bunyan, a foot note from The Pilgrim's Progress

Hell Will Be Hotter For Those Who Talk Doctrine But Don't Do It -Thomas Watson

Knowing God’s will may make a man admired, but it is doing it that makes him blessed. Knowing God’s will without doing it, will not crown us with happiness.

[1] The bare knowledge of God’s will is inefficacious, it does not better the heart. Knowledge alone is like a winter-sun, which has no heat or influence; it does not warm the affections, or purify the conscience. Judas was a great luminary, he knew God’s will, but he was a traitor.

[2] Knowing without doing God’s will, will make the case worse. It will heat hell the hotter. ‘That servant which knew his Lord’s will,’ and did it not, ’shall be beaten with many stripes.’ Luke 12: 47. Many a man’s knowledge is a torch to light him to hell. Thou who hast knowledge of God’s will but does not do it, wherein does thou excel a hypocrite? Nay, wherein does thou excel the devil, who transforms himself into an angel of light? It is improper to call such Christians, who are knowers of God’s will but not doers of it. It is improper to call him a tradesman who never wrought in his trade; so to call him a Christian, who never wrought in the trade of religion. Let us not rest in knowing God’s will. Let it not be said of us, as Plutarch speaks of the Grecians, ‘They knew what was just, but did it not.’ Let us set upon the doing God’s will. ‘Thy will be done.’

John Wesley Casting Out Demons

"At eleven I preached at Bearfield to about three thousand, on the spirit of nature, of bondage, and of adoption.

Returning in the evening, I was exceedingly pressed to go back to a young woman in Kingswood. (The fact I nakedly relate, and leave everyman to his own judgement of it.) I went. She was nineteen or twenty years old; but, it seems, could not write or read. I found her on the bed, two or three persons holding her. It was a terrible sight. Anguish, horror, and despair, above all description, appeared in her pale face. The thousand distortions of her whole body showed how the dogs of Hell were gnawing her heart. The shrieks intermixed were scared to be endured. But her stony eyes could not weep. She screamed, out, as soon as words could find their way, "I am damned, damned; lost for ever! Six days ago you might have helped me. But it is passed. I am the devil's now. I have given myself to him. His I am. Him I must serve. With him I must go to Hell. I will be his. I will serve him. I will go with him to Hell. I cannot be saved. I will not be saved. I must, I will, I will be damned!" She then began praying to the devil. We began-
"Arm of the Lord, awake, awake!"
She immediately sunk down as asleep; but, as soon as we left off, broke out again, with inexpressible vehemence: "Stony hearts, break! I am a warning to you. Break, break, poor stony hearts! Will you not break? What can be done more for stony hearts? I am damned, that you may be saved. Now break, now break, poor stony hearts! You need not be damned, though I must." She then fixed her eyes on the corner of the ceiling, and said, "There he is, ay, there he is! Come, good devil, come! Take me away. You said, you would dash my brains out; come, do it quickly. I am yours. I will be yours. Come just now. Take me away." We interrupted her by calling again upon God: on which she sunk down as before; and another young woman began to roar out as loud as she had done. My brother now came in, it being about nine o'clock. We continued in prayer till past eleven, when God in a moment spoke peace into the soul, first of the first tormented, and then of the other. And they both joined in singing praise to Him who had "stilled the enemy and the avenger."~John Wesley, Journal, Tue 23 Oct 1739

Why I Am No Longer On Facebook

Some months ago, I joined Facebook purely for ministry purposes. Now for those of you who have a life and don't know what Facebook is, it is a cyber-network which consists of people having their own "page", and in most cases the days are spent: "such-a-person wants to add you as a friend", or "such-a-person has sent you some fries (a computer graphic), accept them here," or "such-a-person has thrown a snow ball at you, throw one back." Yes it really is that sad.

Now you may well wonder, how on earth can that be used for ministry purposes? Good question. Well, I never actually got involved in the sending of fries, puppies, or snowballs, or whatever. My idea was, that I would spend as little time on there as possible and just add friends when they find me and ask, or if someone else suggests a friend. Also my Facebook page was set up so that all the posts from this Puritan Fellowship blog would automatically appear on my page, and so I saw it as a way of getting the Gospel to lost family members and old friends.

Now I've never, like so many, had even the slightest problem with Facebook addiction (many sadly spend hours to all day on there), to me it is the most boring thing in the world and I have managed to limit my time on there to just 5-10 minutes a day, just being quick on-and-off to check and maintain it. But the reason I'm leaving is that I think that myself being on there is a bad example to others.

It is clear that many have a serious problem with Facebook addiction. It is impossible to spend so much time on there, without neglecting other more important things, whether it be time alone with God in Prayer, and His Word, spending real time with family, children, husbands and wives, and so much else is neglected for this new cyber-life.

How many professing Christians, will claim they don't have time to go out witnessing or to do some other important duty, yet manage to spend hours on Facebook, taking part in surveys or exchanging random cyber gifts?

I feel that myself and my posts being there are just encouraging Christians to spend even more time on there and so it is counter productive.

Now there are a few Christians (and these are an extremely tiny minority) who use Facebook solely as a platform to actively witness to lost people by sending back and forth emails, and I have no problem with that. But to anyone who uses Facebook solely for witnessing, a few words of caution:

1) Be careful, not to get drawn into the time wasting aspects. I've seen people join for seemingly good motives and before they know it, they are drowning in it.

2) As well as the Facebook Ad blocker, I highly recommend that you set up some sort of parental software to block ALL images when you are on Facebook. If you are going to spend your days witnessing to lost people in cyber-space, then you are going to come across a lot of sensual images. People behave a lot more immoral in internet communities than they do in real life.

3) Spend, as much, or more time, praying and reading the Word of God, as you do witnessing on Facebook.

4) Manage your time well, so you only have set periods of time on there per day and so you protect the neglect of other things like family.

All in all though, "if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out," and so don't pretend you can manage your time well on Facebook and not walk into lust and temptation, if you can't.

I think it is a much wiser use of the time to meet and witness to lost people in real life, and to have real fellowship with Christians rather than 'cyber-friends'.

As I previously said HERE, "...imagine standing before God to give an account for all the hours wasted on Facebook."

"Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil." Eph 5:15-16 "

Phil Johnson Addresses Filthy Pastor Talk at Shepherd’s Conference

Amen and Amen to Phil Johnson:

Here is a link to the summary of Phil Johnson’s presentation this morning at the Shepherd’s conference going on right now. Thank you, Phil Johnson, for shedding biblical light on the current trend of coarse and vulgar speech by pastors desperately seeking relevance. I praise God for Mr. Johnson’s clarity at a time when such confusion is being generated by today’s hireling pastors.

If You Do Not Have A Prayer Life, You're Not A Christian - Bob Jennings --The Prayer Meeting

"[Prayer] is a mark of true Christianity. If you do not have a prayer life, one thing you know for sure is, you're not a Christian. Every Christian has a prayer life, he lives, he walks, he breathes in communion with God. It is a mark of true Christianity, it is a mark of a true church. Mark chapter 11, my house shall be called a house of what? Prayer. ... If you see a church that is not devoted to prayer, you know one thing for sure, it is not a house of Jesus!"~Bob Jennings

Is Your Evangelism No Better Than Bildad The Hyper Calvinist?

In Job chapter 25 we read Bildad exhort despairing Job:
"1Then Bildad the Shuhite answered, 2"Dominion and awe belong to Him Who establishes peace in His heights. 3"Is there any number to His troops? And upon whom does His light not rise? 4"How then can a man be just with God? Or how can he be clean who is born of woman? 5"If even the moon has no brightness And the stars are not pure in His sight, 6How much less man, that maggot, And the son of man, that worm!"

Now everything Bildad says here is correct. But... and there's a big but, it's not what Bildad has said here that is the problem, but what he hasn't said. Bildad just leaves it there with Job doomed and simply offers no hope. And the fact is that many "Christians" today offer little more hope than Bildad did.

Hence Job's response and rebuke in Job 26:
1Then Job responded, 2"What a help you are to the weak! How you have saved the arm without strength! 3"What counsel you have given to one without wisdom! What helpful insight you have abundantly provided! 4"To whom have you uttered words? And whose spirit was expressed through you?"

I was recently asked about those who "evangelise" by doing things like holding up a sign saying. "No homosexuals will enter Heaven." To which my reply was, they could at least quote the whole verse of 1 Cor 6:9-10, that also warns us that no thieves, drunkards, anyone having sex out of wedlock, and those practicing a host of other sins will not enter Heaven either.

But what about you (the reader), what about your own evangelism?
-Have you fallen into the trap like many of spending so much time, showing people that they are condemned, that you offer no or little hope to the recipients?

-
Is your evangelism so void of pleading, or are you carefully constructing your words, like many caught up in hyper-Calvinism, so to avoid the sinner going away with any notion that Jesus died for them, and so in reality it is barely a Gospel call at all, and offers little more hope than Bildad?

The Word Gospel itself means "good news". Yet to leave someone condemned, without pleading with them that they can look to Christ and live and that there is eternal life freely available to them this moment, but to instead just leave people condemned, is about as good news as a cessationist telling you he's praying for your healing.

Now, I think we can agree that in Bildad's case, he didn't offer any hope, because he didn't know any better. And thus en lies the problem. Not only does bad theology lead to bad evangelism, but also dead men with seemingly good theology leads to bad or no evangelism.

The true test that your theology of evangelism is intact IS NOT that it lines up with your misconceptions of hyper-Calvinism, someone's commentary, or chosen creed, but rather: does your evangelism line up with Scripture?

-Do you offer the Gospel as freely as Jesus did?
"If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink."-John 7:37

-Do you plead with people and beg them, like Paul did for lost sinners to be reconciled to God through Jesus Christ?
"Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God."-2 Cor 5:20

-Do you weep for lost sinners like Christ and Paul did?
"Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears"-Acts 20:31

-Do you leave people with the knowledge that the Gospel is a sincere and genuine offer to all to come to Christ and be saved?
"Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, "One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."-Mark 10:21

-Do you offer the Gospel according to Scripture, or do you miss the resurrection?
"For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures"-1 Cor 15:3-4

-Do you spend so much time preaching to other Christians on how NOT to evangelize, and finding fault in their method, that you end up with no or little time to evangelize yourself?
"Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and prostitutes will get into the kingdom of God before you."-Matt 21:31

-Do you spend so much time talking and debating about Calvinism and eschatology, because you are so prideful that everyone else needs to agree with you, that you end up with little or no time to evangelize?
"And that slave who knew his master's will and did not get ready or act in accord with his will, will receive many lashes, but the one who did not know it, and committed deeds worthy of a flogging, will receive but few From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more."-Luke 12:47-48

-Do you say 'evangelism's not my job, some are called to go down into the well, whilst others are called to hold the rope for those going down' (true statement*), but at the same time you practically do neither?
"and kept back some of the price for himself, with his wife's full knowledge, and bringing a portion of it, he laid it at the apostles' feet. But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back some of the price of the land"-Acts 5:2
