Biblical Family pt1-Children Should Be In The Church Meeting-Kevin Williams

In part 1 of our new series on the Biblical Family, looking at Biblical principles regarding the family we look at:
-The importance of children being in the main church fellowship meeting, and we see that the pattern of children with adults/families worshipping the Lord together runs right throughout the Bible.
-And we look at the disastrous effect age segregated worship services and the splitting up the families in church meetings, and passing the parents job of discipling their children to unbiblical youth ministries has had.

Charles Leiter-7 Sermon Series on Holy Spirit-Highly Recommended

Regarding the gifts of the Spirit, and outpourings, blessings, etc, there are generally two extremes; one is charasmania, with fake and unbiblical things going on, and at the other extreme (normally in an over reaction to the first) is cessationism.
This excellently balanced and Biblical series on the Holy Spirit by Charles Leiter is by far the best teachings I have heard on this subject, and I can't even begin to tell you how much these teachings have helped my daily walk with God. Highly Recommended:

What We Do Is The Measure Of What We Really Believe-Roy Hargrave

Do You Care Too Much? Alistair Begg

Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you.

-- Psalm 55:22

Care, even when addressed to legitimate matters, if it is carried to excess, has in it the nature of sin. Again and again Jesus exhorted His followers to avoid anxious care. The apostles reiterated the call; and it is one that cannot be neglected without involving transgression: For the very essence of anxious care is imagining that we are wiser than God and putting ourselves in His place as if we could do for Him what He has undertaken to do for us. We attempt to think of things that we imagine Him forgetting; we work to take upon ourselves a heavy burden, as if He were unable or unwilling to take it for us.

Now this disobedience to His plain precept, this unbelief in His Word, this presumption that intrudes upon His province, is all sinful. But more than this, anxious care often leads to acts of sin. If we cannot calmly leave our affairs in God's hand but attempt to carry our own burden, we will be tempted to use wrong means to help ourselves. This sin leads to a forsaking of God as our counselor and resorting instead to human wisdom. This is going to the broken well instead of to the fountain, a sin of which Israel was guilty in the past.

Anxiety makes us doubt God's loving-kindness, and so our love to Him grows cold; we feel mistrust, and in this we grieve the Spirit of God, so that our prayers are hindered, our consistent example spoiled, and our life one of self-seeking. Such lack of confidence in God leads us to wander far from Him; but if through simple faith in His promise we cast each burden as it comes upon Him and are "not . . . anxious about anything"1 because He undertakes to care for us, it will keep us close to Him and strengthen us against temptation. "You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you."2

In part 5 of our series Evangelism-How To Share Your Faith Biblically (see pt 1, & pt 2 & pt 3, & pt4), we look at:
-How we are only a steward of everything we have here in this life.
-The responsibility each person has to spend our resources and time for the glory of God.

Christ's Return - Roy Hargrave

Someone Who Says They Hunger For God, But Live A Loose Life Are Being Dishonest-Tim Conway

"Let me tell you something! You can come along and you can say 'I have a hunger for God'. You know what's a dead give away to it? Show me your hands and show me your heart. You tell me you've got a hunger for God, let me tell you this: your obedience and your carefulness to not grieve the Spirit of God, will be a direct indication of what hunger you do have for God. I'll tell you this, if you tell me you hunger for God, then you live a loose life, you live a life where you just allow trash and garbage and this worldly filth to come in and clutter things up, you're not being honest. 'Internet Calvinists' Make Me Weary - Phil Johnson

"I’m a little weary of those overzealous Calvinists on the Internet who treat everything as simplistically as possible. Always trying to outdo everyone to see who can adopt the highest form of High Calvinism. And as a result-and you can actually see this trend if you watch Calvinist discussions on the Internet-modern Calvinist circles seem to be filled with guys who insist that Christ’s death had no benefit whatsoever for anyone other than the elect and God’s only desire with regard to the reprobate is to damn them period.

Too many Calvinists embrace the doctrine of limited atonement, they finally see the truth of it but then they think, “Oh that’s that.” Christ died for the elect and in no sense are their any universal benefits in the atonement, so the atonement is limited to the elect in every sense and it has no relevance whatsoever to the non-elect. I think that’s an extreme position and it’s not supported by many of the classic Calvinist theologians and writers if you read carefully what Calvinists have said throughout history. I want to encourage you read Andrew Fuller and Thomas Boston. Read what people like Robert L. Dabney and William G. T. Shedd and B. B. Warfield and Charles Hodge wrote on the subject of the atonement. Read John Owen too, but don’t imagine that John Owens’s book The Death of Death in the Death of Christ represents the only strain of Calvinist thought on the issue. It doesn’t. In fact, far from it. If you begin to study this issue in depth you will quickly discover that the classic Calvinist view on the extent of the atonement is a lot less narrow and a lot less cut and dried than the typical seminary student Calvinist on the Internet wants to admit. Historic Calvinism, as a movement has usually acknowledged that there are universal aspects of the atonement. Calvin himself had a view of the extent of the atonement that was far more broad and, and far more extensive than the average Calvinist today would care to recognize."~Phil Johnson

If You Don't Want People To Read Your Gospel Tracts, Use Small Print

The secular business world uses small print for information they don't want you to read. Any 'catch' or detail that would put you off from buying their product is hidden in the small print. The reason being because they know 99.99% of the people won't bother to read anything that's in small print.

"for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light."~Lk 16:8b

Why do so many Christian Gospel tracts use small print?

The answer is to keep the cost down, so more can be given out. But you would never find a secular company with idea of making their print size tiny, so they could use less paper, and give out more leaflets for their products. Because they know it would be counter productive.

One lesson I've learned of late, is to make sure the print size on your Gospel tracts, invites people to read them, otherwise most people won't.

Another tip: It's worth having a good space on your tracts, for your church details, service times, and how to get there (and not as a small print clause). Remember, we are called to make disciples, not to preach and run.

Violent Mobs In The Days Of John Wesley -Don't View The Past Through Rose Tinted Spectacles

Note: For those of you who think today is worse than ever and look at the past through 'rose tinted spectacles' and imagine the days of John Wesley and George Whitefield as some kind of "Christian Utopia", which was 'Gospel friendly"; here is a quote from John Wesley that will make you think again:

"The mob had been gathering all Monday night, and on Tuesday morning they began their work. They assaulted, one after another, all the houses of those who were called Methodists. They first broke all their windows, suffering neither glass, lead, or frames to remain therein. Then they made their way in; and all the tables, chairs, chest of drawers, with whatever was not easily removable, they dashed in pieces, particularly shop-goods, and furniture of every kind. What they could not well break, as feather-beds, they cut in pieces, and strewed about the room. William Stitch's wife was lying-in: but that was all one; they pulled away her bed too, and cut it in pieces. (Had the French come in that place, would they have done more?)"~John Wesley, Journal, Mon 6 Feb 1744.

If God Is Love Then Can’t God Just Forgive & Let Everyone Into Heaven?

Gospel Tract by Kevin Williams.

Many people wrongly think, “Yes I know I’m not perfect, sure I’m a sinner and have done things wrong in my life, but if God is Love (which He is) then can’t He just forgive me?”
But think about that?
If a criminal broke into your home and did something horrible, raping and murdering a loved one, and that murderer was brought before the courts and the Judge said “I find you guilty, but hey, I’m a judge of love, I’m merciful, so you’re free to go.” Be honest, you would not think what that judge did was loving, but you’d think he was worse than the murderer. A loving judge would see that justice is done, and because God’s love is infinite, His justice is also infinite, and so God will punish all sin wherever it’s found. Just one sin is enough to send someone to Hell for all eternity (James 2:10), and let’s face it we’ve all sinned a lot more than once.

Why Does God Send People To Hell forever?

If you saw someone stamp on an ant, no one would call the police. If a homeless person was murdered, that's a different matter. The murderer would probably get six-to-seven years in prison. However, if the Queen was murdered, then the murderer would probably never see daylight again. Same crime there, MURDER, all 3 times, but a different punishment each time. Why? Because the one whom the crime was committed against is esteemed higher. Now when you consider all of our sins are committed against an Infinitely Righteous & Holy God, then all of our sins, even what we deem as ‘little sins’, are crimes of an infinite magnitude.

How Do We Know The Bible Is True
& Really The Word Of God?

The Bible gives us the inbuilt proof of prophecy. The Bible predicts the future in great detail, far in advance and has always been 100% accurate in doing so. No other religious book can make this claim. I’ll give you one example:

Psalm 22, written 1000 years Before Christ, is a long and vivid description of the Messiah to come, on the cross, and in verse 16 it says, They pierced my hands and my feet. Now obviously that is referring to the nails on the cross. But the significance of this is that this prophecy in Psalm 22, was written 1000 years before Christ, yet crucifixion in all it’s forms was not even invented for another 400 years, until 600 BC, and then it was only hands, the feet came much later. David the Prophet who wrote Psalm 22 had no idea what crucifixion was, and yet he describes the crucifixion account so vividly there. The Bible is full of detailed and accurate prophecy like this proving beyond doubt it is of supernatural origin.

Who Is Jesus Christ?

In Zechariah 12:10, a prophecy written 500 years before Christ, the LORD God says,
they shall look upon me whom they have pierced.
God says there, hundreds of years before, it is God Himself who would be pierced for our sins on the cross.

Why Was Jesus Crucified?

As you can see from the above prophecies, the cross of Jesus Christ was no accident, but was the reason He came.
The Bible speaks of our sin as a debt, like a fine penalty, and every time you sin you are treasuring up for yourself wrath to be revealed against you on the Day of Judgement.~Rom 2:5

In order for us to be forgiven, the penalty for our sin must be paid in full, and as our penalty is infinite, only an infinite God could pay our fine. So God Himself paying the penalty for our sin was the only way to save us.

God did something wonderful, so that you
can be forgiven and made right with God.

You may have heard the Scripture, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.~Jn 3:16

2000 years ago, the God who made this universe, so loved YOU, that He entered into His own Creation and became a man, and dwelt among us. He was born of a virgin. Then Jesus lived a sinless life, He was perfect in all his ways, He never lied, never stole,
He did miracles proving His Deity, that He was God.
Jesus walked on water in a fierce storm, (When was the last time you saw someone walking on water?)
He fed 5000 people with just 5 loaves and 2 fishes,
He calmed the storm, the wind and the waves, at the command of His voice,
He healed incurable diseases, made the blind see, the deaf hear, and the lame walk.
He raised Lazarus from the dead at the command of His voice.

And then, Jesus went to the cross. Why?
To pay the penalty in full for our sins. To take upon Himself the wrath of God that we deserve. To take our Hell for us, so that we don’t have to.

Like Isaiah prophesised 700 BC
he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement [the punishment] of our peace [peace with God] was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

And then on the 3rd Day, Jesus rose from the dead. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the most attested fact in history, even our calendar BC & AD is based upon it.
Death and the grave could not hold Jesus Christ, and if you will go to Him. If you will turn away from your own way and surrender your life to Him, then death and the grave, Hell, will have no hold on you.
This is the eternal life that Jesus offers YOU.
It’s like, if you had a fine of £10,000 pounds, and someone else paid your fine for you. Could the judge then come after you and ask you to pay the fine? The answer is no, because your fine has already been paid in full. That’s why the Bible says There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus
For all those truly in Christ, there’s no Hell to pay, because Christ has already paid on the cross the penalty for all of their sin.

Salvation, being completely forgiven and made right with God, comes by turning away from self, and unto Jesus Christ. Stop thinking you’re good enough to get to Heaven, when the Bible says you’re not. You must completely give up, surrender, and fall into the arms of Jesus Christ and follow Him, trusting solely that you’re going to Heaven, because of what Jesus has done for you in paying for your sin on the cross.

Jesus said him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out~Jn 6:37 He will by no means refuse. If you truly want eternal life, if you truly want to go to Jesus and have complete forgiveness of sins, then He says there, He will by no means refuse you.

Jesus said, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.
Whoever you are, whatever you’ve done, behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. You may not have tomorrow. Death nearly always comes unexpected. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. There is nothing more important that being right with God.

What are you waiting for?

Should Preachers Be Paid? - Mack Tomlinson

Should Preachers be Paid?

The following question came to me this week from a dear brother regarding the financial support of a pastor:

"Mack-- I have a quick question- Have you heard of a book called "Pagan Christianity" by Frank Viola and George Barna? I an email from a person in our church regarding this, and I have never heard of this book or the authors. I shared the Scriptures in 1 Cor 9 and 1 Tim about pastors/elders being supported by the church, and how it is biblical. Just curious if you have heard of this book or the authors? A person I know is reading this book and it is scaring me. The book states that churches shouldn't meet in buildings and that pastors shouldn't be paid because all the tithes should go toward the poor, widows, orphans, etc. So now someone I know says they are going to a house church with a couple who read this book because they want an "organic church." The book repeatedly refers to Paul as the model pastor who refused money for his preaching. But according to the negative reviews of the book, the only verses cited in the book are those which support the authors' viewpoint."

My reply

Dear brother,

These men, Mr. Viola and Mr. Barna, do not know the Bible well enough or they would not espouse such a view, much less, write a book that states such a position. It is a radically extreme tangent steming from Emergent theology which they are teaching that is not the position of the New Testament. To put it simply, they are wrong about this.

Viola and Barna cite the apostle Paul's refusal of any financial support in 1 Corinthians 9 as their proof text to say categorically that no pastors or ministers ought to be financially supported.

Let's think about the issue more fully. Paul, as a pioneering apostle, preached the gospel and was establishing churches in areas where the gospel had never been preached; thus he made a free choice to not receive any support directly from the places where he was laboring, NOT as a permanent pastoring elder, but as a missionary who would be moving on after the church was established. He did this directly for the purpose that no one in such a context could ever say that he came there to preach with wrong motives for money.

But If one takes the time to include all the verses that address the issue, they have to include not only 1 Cor. 9:7-14, but also
Matthew 10:10, Luke 10:7, and 1 Tim. 5:17-18, all of which directly teach the financial support of preachers, evangelists, or pastoring elders.

This is not an unclear or complicated issue. You have to be either biblical ignorant or dishonest with what Scripture actually says on this point to deny the clear teaching of the New Testament that the financial support of ministers is a God-ordained principle of truth. Men who are called of God have the freedom to decline support and they often do, for various reasons. But any biblical church does not have the freedom to withhold the support or to view it as being wrong or questionable. God has given commandment that it ought to be provided.

Let's look at what both Paul and Jesus say about this issue of the support of gospel ministers.

In 1 Cor. 9:7-14, Paul clearly teaches that ministers are to be supported; the context without question is the gospel ministry and the physical, financial support that ought to come to those who labor in it. Far from arguing against the support of preachers, Paul is arguing FOR it.

In vs. 7, he uses three illustrations, all which are chosen to affirm support of preachers by churches:

1) "Do soldiers go to war or give service at their own expense?"-- obvious implication- NO

2) "Who plants a vineyard and does not eat of the fruit?"-- obvious answer- NO ONE

3) "Who feeds a flock and does not drink some of the milk of the flock?" -- obvious answer- NO ONE

The three illustrations all are given to confirm a universal truth-- those who labor at something are to be rewarded with provision directly because of that labor and in proportion to that labor.

Then in vss. 8-10, Paul affirms that this is not just his opinion, when he says, "Am I saying these things just as a man? Or does not the law say the same thing? for it is written in the law of Moses, 'You shall not muzzle the ox that treads out the corn' (Deut. 25:4); does God take care of oxen? Or, says He it altogether for our sakes? for our sakes, no doubt, this is written, that he that plows should plow in hope and he that threshes in hope should partake of his hope." Thus Paul affirms, without question, that this is not just his opinion but rather is God's ordinance.

Paul then applies this to the Old Testament priests, which he refers to in vs. 13: "Do you not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?"

Then the finishing statement is beyond question in verse 14, which verse has only thus far been illustrated by Paul, but now he says it openly and directly: "Even so has the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel."

Paul has said that he has chosen, in his particular situation, to forgo that privilege because he is an apostle: "Nevertheless, we have not used this power, but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ." (vs. 12) Paul, laboring where the gospel has never been preached, chooses this path to make absolutely sure that no one can ever say that he has come into a geographical area as a stranger and is preaching with a motive for financial gain. That is why he gives his example, not as the rule, but as the exception to the rule.

His example of declining support is the exception, not the rule; otherwise, why would he argue so clearly for the support of ministers if he is setting his example forth as the rule to follow? His entire teaching through this chapter affirms that pastoral support is right and is to be commended rather than avoided. Paul's choice to decline it is for himself, but he never even infers this to be the standard for all other ministers, especially elders who labor pastorally in a local church.

So 1 Corinthians 9, which contains Paul's decline of ministerial financial support, is a powerful argument FOR ministerial support-- that it is the revealed will of God and is the general principle which ought to be followed. Ministers can decline available support if their situation lends itself to that choice, but the church never has the freedom to withhold it or for anyone to judge a man wrong if he receives it.

Then we come to 1 Timothy 5, which contains instructions for the local church, such as the treatment of older men, younger men, widows, and then elders, which are pastoring elders in the church. In vs. 17, he says: "Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine." Paul here makes a clear statement of command concerning what the church is to do toward the support of their pastoring elders, especially for those who "labor (work hard at) at preaching and teaching." The church is to give "double honor" to those who do this, and then he clarifies and defines what that means, making it clear that he is talking about support in the physical (carnal) and financial realm by quoting again
Deut. 25:4, what he's already said to the Corinthians on the same issue in 1 Corinthians 9:9: "You shall not muzzle the ox that treads out the corn", thus affirming to Timothy that this is divine law and the reveal standard of God.

Secondly, in the same verse 18, Paul quotes Jesus from Matthew 10:10 and Luke 10:7, where our Lord, in sending out preachers and evangelists, stated that "the laborer is worthy of his hire", thus showing the Lord gave clear instruction that the gospel laborer will be provided for in and through his labors in the kingdom.

When these texts are seen in their context, it is clear that Paul was not giving his example of declining support as the obligatory rule for all ministers who are pastoring or preaching. Instead, both Paul and Jesus affirm that such support is correct, logical, needed, and is the revealed will of God.

By the way, it is also true that other churches DID support Paul at different times, especially the Philippian church, which he makes abundantly clear in his writings.

So in using Paul's example of declining support, Viola and Barna tell only half the story, give half the facts and half the truth, if indeed this is what they mean, when they conclude and teach others that it is wrong to pay preachers or elders because Paul was not supported. This completely misrepresents the New Testament position.

It's sad and too bad that people are led to extreme and tangent positions on such issues by men who clearly do not know what they are talking about, but want to convince the wider evangelical community that they do. Regarding this area of eccelessiology in church life and doctrine, their position is a departure from the entire history of evangelical truth. These men ought to stick to what they do best, whatever that is, which is not interpreting the Bible. On this issue, Viola and Barna are weighed in the balance of biblical truth and are found to fail the test. The New Testament clearly teaches that ministers and pastors ought to be supported. Those who disagree are simply wrong because they are either misinformed, uninformed or dishonest.

I suppose the conclusion concerning our brother's question at the beginning is simply this-- Perhaps we ought to agree with Jesus and Paul on this matter of paying preachers rather than Viola and Barna. That, to me, seems very safe and much healthier for the church of Jesus Christ and the advance of the gospel.

And a final word to all you laborers-- you are worthy of your hire!! Jesus is the one who said it; Praise the Great Shepherd of the sheep for that abiding truth! So keep on laboring !!

Atheist Hypocrites

When out witnessing, (in fact this has happened more than once) I asked a student "charity" worker (usually immoral atheists) who was wearing a t-shirt for a children's charity, I asked him, "What do you think of abortion?" he replied "The more the merrier". I then asked him "What do you call someone who wears a t-shirt about protecting children, but thinks it's okay to kill children? It begins with 'H'". This cartoon really sums up a lot of God haters:

“Shoot them, and we will let you live!”

The pastor had struck a deal with the Communists in the Chinese prison where they were being held. But the two Christian girls standing before him were resolved not to renounce their faith. A fellow prisoner who watched the terrible scene described their faces as pale but beautiful beyond belief—infinitely sad, but sweet. They were determined to face death rather than turn their backs on Christ.
The pastor reasoned, “Why should we all three die? If I kill you and they let me live, then I can continue to work among the churches.”
The girls spoke to him softly, “Before you shoot us, we want to thank you for all you have meant to us. You led us to Christ, baptized us, and gave us Holy Communion. May God reward you for all the good you have done. You also taught us that Christians are sometimes weak and commit terrible sins, but they can be forgiven again. When you regret what you are about to do to us, don’t despair like Judas but repent like Peter. And remember that our last thoughts of you are not of hatred and anger, but of love and forgiveness. We all pass through times of darkness. We die gladly.”
But the pastor’s heart was already hardened, and he shot them. Immediately afterward, the Communists shot him.

People who are faced with the prospect of a sudden death may find their thoughts turning to friends and family or to unfulfilled dreams. Some recall seeing their lives “flash before their eyes.” This total recall, however, is likely interrupted for those who fall victim to the ultimate betrayal—being murdered by someone they considered a friend. Anger, bitterness, and hatred for the supposed friend would all seem justifiable. Would forgiveness factor in at all? As Christians, we must choose to extend forgiveness in every circumstance, even those involving life and death. Like the girls in this story, your reaction to betrayal preaches an effective sermon. How might your choosing to forgive point the way to Jesus for someone you know?

-Every man's responsibility to believe,
-Evangelism is the job of every Christian and we have a responsibility to preach the Gospel to others, and this really does make a difference.
-Not Evangelizing is as bigger sin as stealing and adultery.
-How everything we do in this life has a consequence that lasts for eternity.

-That ultimately people are sent to Hell for rejecting Jesus Christ and all sin is a result of rejecting Jesus.

The Number Of True Believers Is Shocking-Conrad Murrell.

"I am persuaded that if the truth were known, we would be shocked to discover how small the remnant of true believers is."~Conrad Murrell.

Mat 7:13Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

21
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Don't Be Satisfied Without Full Conversion-Charles Spurgeon

"Do not be satisfied, any of you, with half a conversion! I am afraid that there are a great many who have not much more than half a conversion. I know a man-I hope he is converted-but I wish that the Lord would convert his temper. He prays very nicely, but you should see him when he is red in the face with anger at his wife! I know a man-I hope he is a Christian, it is not for me to judge-but I wish that the Lord would convert his pocket. It needs a button taken off, for it is very difficult to get open! It is very easy to put something in, but hard to get anything out for any good purpose."~Charles Spurgeon

"Inconsistent professors are the greatest stumbling blocks to the cause of Christ."~Charles Spurgeon.
