To Sin Is Denying God's Wisdom & Goodness ~Charles Spurgeon

"...remember that sin attacks God in all his attributes, assails him on his throne, and stabs at his existence. What is sin? Is it not an insult to God's wisdom? O sinner, God biddeth thee do his will; when thou doest the contrary it is because thou dost as much as say, "I know what is good for me, and God does not know." You do in effect declare that infinite wisdom is in error, and that you, the creature of a day, are the best judge of happiness. Sin impugns God's goodness; for by sin you declare that God has denied you that which would make you happy, and this is not the part of a good, tender, and loving Father. Sin cuts at the Lord's wisdom with one hand, and at his goodness with the other.
Sin also abuses the mercy of God. When you, as many of you have done, sin with the higher hand because of his longsuffering towards you; when, because you have no sickness, no losses, no crosses, therefore you spend your time in revelry and obstinate rebellhief? It is no small grief to the loving father to see his substance spent with harlots in riotous living; he cannot endure it that his child should be so degraded as to turn even the mercy which would woo him to repentance into a reason why he should sin the more against him. Besides, let me remind the careless and impenitent that every sin is a defiance of divine power. In effect it is lifting your puny fists against the majesty of heaven, and defying God to destroy you. Every time you sin, you defy the Lord to prove whether he can maintain his law or no. Is this a slight thing, that a worm, the creature of a day, should defy the Lord of ages, the God that filleth and upholdeth all things by the word of his power? Well may he be weary, when he has to bear with such provocations and insults as these! Mention what attribute you will, and sin has blotted it; speak of God in any relationship you choose, and sin has cast a slur upon him. It is evil, only evil, and that continually: in every view of it it must be offensive to the Most High. Sinner, dost thou know that every act of disobedience to God's law is virtually an act of high treason? What dost thou do but seek to be God thyself, thine own master, thine own lord? Every time thou swervest from his will, it is to put thy will into his place; it is to make thyself a god, and to undeify the Most High. And is this a little offence, to snatch from his brow the crown, and from his hand the sceptre? I tell thee it is such an act that heaven itself could not stand unless it were resented: if this crime were suffered to go unpunished, the wheels of heaven's commonwealth would be taken from their axles, and the whole frame of moral government would be unhinged. Such a treason against God shall certainly be visited with punishment.
To crown all, sin is an onslaught upon God himself, for sin is atheism of heart. Let his religious profession be what it may, the sinner hath said in his heart, "No God." Ruler. Is this a trifle? To be a Deicide! To desire to put God out of his own world! Is this a thing to be winked at? Can the Most High hear it and not be pressed down beneath its weight? I pray you do not think that I would make a needless outcry against sin and disobedience. It is not in the power of human imagination to exaggerate the evil of sin, nor will it ever be possible for mortal lips, though they should be touched like those of Esaias with a live coal from off the altar, to thunder out the ten-thousandth part of the enormity of the least sin against God. Think, dear friends! We are his creatures, and yet we will not do his will. We are fed by him, the breath in our nostrils he gives us, and yet we spend that breath in murmuring and rebellion." ~Charles Spurgeon

Jesus Christ the Lord- Cease Not ~Mack Tomlinson

"And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ."
- Acts 5:42

Jesus Christ is our message. All other truths, however glorious they are, must be subservient to this one theme- Jesus Christ. He is God, the living God. He is Jehovah, the Lord of glory, the eternal Word made flesh. He is true God who fully became man. As one said, "He who sees the Son sees the Father in the face of Christ. Christ was not God because he was virgin born. He was virgin born because He was God."

This God became a true man, a true human being; He claimed to be God. “I and the Father are one.”

C. S. Lewis- “A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said wouldn’t be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic, like a man who says he’s a poached egg or he would be a liar and a devil from hell. You must make your choice. Either this man is the Son of God or a madman or worse. But don’t come up with any such nonsense about his being only a great human teacher. He hasn’t left us that choice and He did not intend to.”

Who He is to us:

God Almighty Jehovah
The eternal I AM
The Son of God
The Redeemer
The Lord of Glory
The Saviour of sinners
The Saviour of the world
The Lamb that was slain
The only revelation of God to man
The One Mediator between God and man
The Door to heaven
The Way, the Truth, and the Life
The Light of the world
The Bread of life
The Living water
The Lion of the tribe of Judah
The Eternal Life
The Shepherd of our souls

What He did for us:

He lived
He preached
He taught
He obeyed the Father
He healed
He performed miraculous signs and wonders
He walked among men
He loved sinners
He revealed the Father
He never sinned
He fulfilled the law in our behalf
He obeyed the holy law of God for us

He went freely in place of us to embrace a rugged cruel method of capital punishment- the Roman cross

He bled and died there as a substitute in our place
A ransom, payment for sin
He bore and took the full holy wrath of Almighty God for us
He died taking on Himself all our wrath, bearing all our punishment, satisfying the demands of holy justice
His life and his blood were the perfect payment, successfully atoning for every sin
He was buried for three days
He rose again the third day
He’s alive
He ascended to heaven
He is exalted to the Father's right hand
He's been given all authority now in heaven and in earth
He's reigning in the universe
He’s coming again
He is saving all sinners who will come to Him, bow the knee, yield to His Lordship, repent and believe the gospel, and turn to him as Lord. He is Lord of all.

The early church ceased not to preach Jesus Christ. He’s the Christ, the Son of the living God. The whole gospel is contained in this person of Jesus Christ our Lord. This is the message of the true church-- Jesus Christ

Our message is not:

Politics
Education
Social reform
Government improvement
Religion and the equality of all sincere faiths
Social justice
The preservation and improvement of the world

Our message is-- "Daily . . . from house to house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ." The gospel, the gospel of the grace of God, the gospel of Jesus Christ. The truth about Jesus Christ- it's the only thing God has to say to this world.

So cease not-- Just keep telling people

There’s a God, He;s the only true and living God.
He made you; He owns you; He will call you to account; He’s the judge of all the earth.
He has ordained a Saviour and a Judge, His Son Jesus Christ.
He died to forgive your sins. He's the only Saviour. Come to Him. Believe on Him. Give yourself away to Him as your Lord.

Speaking of the preciousness of this exclusive message, some in history have said:

Christ’s blood is heaven’s key.

The doctrine of the death of Christ is the substance of the gospel.

Jesus Christ never died for our good works, which were not worth dying for. He died for our sins.

One drop of Christ’s blood is worth more than heaven and earth.

God had condemned sin before, but never so perfectly as in the death of His Son.

Death stung itself to death when it stung Christ on the cross.

At Calvary’s cross--

God put all our sins upon His Son

"He who knew no sin was made sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God in Him."

There God condemned sin, massacred sin, put sin to death, and conquered it forever on that tree in our Saviour who died there.

Cease not in telling it. Cease not in preaching it. Ceasing not in believing it. Cease not in take all your consolation from it. Out of the cross flows all our hope, peace, assurance, help, strength, and every drop of mercy that comes to us. Cease not staying at the cross. And cease not telling others, even if they kill you for saying it.

Sol pt 19-Delightful Rest For A Weary Soul-Kevin Williams

Part 19 of our Christ centered series on the Song of Solomon
Many wearied souls sense they 'are not out of the woods' yet as far as the judgement of God is concerned.
Many wrongly try to seek assurance and comfort from things other than Christ i.e. they seek for a feeling, or look for assurance in their works, their abilty to perform. Some seek satisfaction in a relationship, job etc.
In this sermon, we see how Christ has already provided our every need and so YOU just have to stop looking in other places, and just sit down and rest and delight in Him who has done it all for you!

I heard the voice of Jesus say ~Horatius Bonar

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
"Come unto me and rest;
lay down, thou weary one, lay down
thy head upon my breast."
I came to Jesus as I was,
so weary, worn, and sad;
I found in him a resting place,
and he has made me glad.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
"Behold, I freely give
the living water; thirsty one,
stoop down and drink, and live."
I came to Jesus, and I drank
of that life-giving stream;
my thirst was quenched, my soul revived,
and now I live in him.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
"I am this dark world's light;
look unto me, thy morn shall rise,
and all thy day be bright."
I looked to Jesus, and I found
in him my Star, my Sun;
and in that light of life I'll walk
till traveling days are done.

When His Face Is Eclipsed Remember You Are His Child Forever ~Octavius Winslow

"My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" Matt 27:46b

"In considering our Lord's abandonment by the Father on the cross, there are two or three preliminary views we must keep before the mind, or we may be beguiled, unconsciously, into perplexity and error. In the first place, let it be premised that in this hour of darkness and desertion through which our Lord was passing, there was no separation, not the slightest loosening of the tie that bound them, of Christ's Divinity from His humanity. The fulness of the Godhead still dwelt in Jesus bodily; He was not the less Divine now that, in His extreme anguish and suffering, He appeared all the more human. As it was from His Divinity that the atoning sacrifice of Christ derived its virtue, it was not probable, nor was it possible, that, at the awful crisis of His atoning death, there should be the slightest separation between the complex natures of our Lord. His Deity was in union with the humanity at the moment He uttered the cry of desertion, now the subject of our study. To the fact of the existence of a Divine Sufferer, all nature, in her marvellous prodigies, now bore testimony. The earth trembled on its axis- the sun veiled its light- the rock was rent in twain- hades gave back its population- the grave yielded up its dead- all nature was robed in mourning because He who formed the earth created that sun, piled those rocks, and wore in His belt the keys of hades and the grave, was, as man, and for man, expiring upon the tree. It was nature's testimony to the Godhead of its Maker.
To a like conclusion we may come, beloved, in all our reasoning in seasons of soul-darkness and distress. Through whatever mental or spiritual exercises the children of God may pass, there is not the slightest change in their divine and heavenly nature. The child of God is born again of incorruptible seed; He is a partaker of the Divine nature; and no deeper discovery of the principle of corruption in his heart, no veiling of the light of God's countenance, touches the spiritual principle, or affects the divine nature. The soul may pass through various eclipses, sometimes partial, at other times total, nevertheless, like our blessed Lord, the profoundest gloom which enshrouds it but shades, not extinguishes, the divine sun within. Rejoice, then, O believer, in the immortality of your divine relationship to God, in the indestructible nature of your spiritual life- once His adopted child, remember that you are His child forever." ~Octavius Winslow

Christ holds out His hand all the day long to poor sinners ~Octavius Winslow

God is love.” 1 John 4:8

God in Christ is no longer a “consuming fire,” but a God of love, of peace; a reconciled God. God in Christ holds out His hand all the day long to poor sinners. He receives all; He welcomes all; He rejects, He refuses, He casts out none. It is His glory to pardon a sinner. It is the glory of His power, it is the glory of His love, it is the glory of His wisdom, it is the glory of His grace, to take the prey from the mighty, to deliver the lawful captive, to pluck the brand from the burning, to lower the golden chain of His mercy to the greatest depth of human wretchedness and guilt, to lift the needy and place him among the princes.

Behold Christ upon that cross! Every pang that He endures, every stroke that He receives, every groan that He utters, every drop of blood that He sheds, proclaims that God is love, and that He stands pledged and is ready to pardon the vilest of the vile. Justice, sheathing its sword, and retiring satisfied from the scene, leaves Mercy gloriously triumphant. And “God delights in mercy.”

Having at such an infinite cost opened a channel; even through the smitten heart of His beloved Son; through which His mercy may flow boundless and free, venture near, nothing doubting. No feature of your case is discouraging, or can possibly arrest the pardon. Your age, your protracted rebellion against God, your long life of indifference to the concerns of your soul, the turpitude and number of your sins, your lack of deep convictions or of stronger faith, nor worth or worthiness to recommend you to His favor; are no true impediments to your approach, are no pleas why you should not draw near and touch the outstretched scepter, bathe in the open fountain, put on the spotless robe, welcome the gracious pardon, and press it with gratitude and transport to your adoring heart.

In the light of this truth, cultivate loving and kindly views of God. Ever view Him, ever approach Him, and ever transact your soul’s affairs with Him, in and through Jesus. He is the one Mediator between God and your soul. God your Father may now be leading you through deep and dark waters. His voice may sound roughly to you. His dim outline is, perhaps, all that you can see of Him. His face seems veiled and averted; yet deal with Him now in Christ, and all your hard thoughts, trembling fears, and unbelieving doubts shall vanish.

In Jesus every perfection of God dissolves into grace and love. With your eye upon the cross, and looking at God through that cross, all the dark letters of His providence will in a moment become radiant with light and glory. That God, who has so revealed Himself in Jesus, must be love, all love, and nothing but love, even in the most dark, painful, and afflictive dealings with His beloved people!

Strength for the Day- His Love -

"As your days, so shall your strength be." Deuteronomy 33:25

This promise ensures us suitable and sufficient strength for all future days; it is made by One who loves us dearly. He loves us! But who can describe or represent His love?

It is Infinite love--and cannot be comprehended!

It is Eternal love--and cannot be measured!

It is Unchangeable love--and cannot be diverted from its objects!

It is Sovereign love--and was fixed on them without anything in them to attract or draw it toward them!

It is Divine love deeper than a father's love, more tender than a mother's love, and stronger than a husband's love.

This Divine love is a fire that cannot be quenched, an ocean that cannot be exhausted, and a sun that will never set!

True & False Preachers - William Fenner

"We are not the ministers of Christ if we preach in such a way that unconverted men do not know they are unconverted. Unless preachers preach so as to make the consciences of their hearers feel in what spiritual condition they are truly in, then they may be ministers of Satan, but they are not ministers of Christ." - William Fenner (1600-1640)
HT: Mack T.

To The Atheist ~Martyn Lloyd Jones

"Say if you like that you do not believe in God, you nevertheless have a sense of God, and you have to argue with yourself. And all your intellectual arguments are really brought forward to boost your own assertion. While you are asserting that you do not believe and that you can prove scientifically that there is no God, something within you is pronouncing against your disbelief and assuring you that there is a God. You are speaking with eloquence in order to drown the voice within you that speaks for God. This is in us all. There is a universal sense of God. Even the most primitive tribes and races have a sense of God and a sense of judgment.

Yes, and coupled with that-I am being brutally frank, am I not?-there is our fear of death.

"Ah," you say, "but modern people aren't afraid of death."
Are they not? Then why do they take so much trouble to avoid speaking about it? Why do they regard it as morbid to be reminded of it? The fact of the matter is that this present age has a horror of death. It is controlled, in a sense, by the fear of death. The Scripture says we are those "who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage" (Heb 2:15) ~Martyn Lloyd Jones

Words Reveal the Heart ~J.C. Ryle

Let it be a settled principle again in the Christian faith, that when a man's general conversation is ungodly, his heart is graceless and unconverted. Let us not give way to the foolish notion, that no one can know anything of the state of another's heart, and that although men are living wickedly, they have good hearts at the bottom. Such notions are flatly contradictory to our Lord's teaching. Is the general tone of a man's speech carnal, worldly, godless or profane? Then let us understand that this is the state of his heart! When a man's tongue is extensively wrong, it is absurd and unscriptural to say that his heart is right!

"No good tree bears bad fruit; nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart; and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart, his mouth speaks!" -- Luke 6:43-45

Part 15 of our Christ centered series on the Song of Solomon

Are you living with a defiled conscience, or are you ready to meet Christ? Many know they have things in their life they need to deal with, but keep putting it off until a later date. But the language of the New Testament is one of urgency to constantly be ready to meet Christ. Are you holding on to sin? If so then perhaps you've not seen or forgotten the truth of Songs 1:16 that Christ is all fair (without flaw) and pleasant.
