Little Sins by JR Miller & Minced Oaths by Mack Tomlinson
Little Sins
"Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same--will be called least in the kingdom of Heaven." Matthew 5:19
Many people are careful about breaking large commandments and committing heinous sins--while they commit "little" sins continually and without scruple.
They would not tell a direct lie for the world, but their speech is full of little falsehoods!
They would not steal money from the purse or drawer of another, and yet they continually commit small thefts! For example, by mistake the grocer gives them a penny too much change--and they do not think of returning it. Through the carelessness of a postal worker, the postage stamp on a letter is left uncancelled, and they take it off and use it a second time.
They would not purposely try to blacken a neighbor's name or destroy his character, and yet they repeat to others the evil whispersabout him which they have heard, and thus soil his reputation.
They would not swear or curse in the coarse way of the ungodly, but they are continually using such minced oaths such as, Gosh! Gees! Heck! and other mild, timid substitutes for overt swearing.
They would not do flagrant acts of wickedness to disgrace themselves, but their lives are honeycombed with all kinds of little meannesses, impurities, selfishnesses, and bad tempers.
We need to remember, that little disobediences harm our witness for the kingdom of Heaven.
Little sinsmar the beauty of our character.
Then, little sins are sure to grow! The trickling leak in the dike becomes a torrent deluging vast plains!
Ofttimes, too, little sins are infinite in their consequences.
We ought never to indulge even the smallest faults or evil habits, but should aim always at perfection of character, and perfection is made up of 'littles'. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Editor's note: Minced oaths are used to avoid swearing, when expressing surprise or annoyance. Minced oaths are usually, although not exclusively, religious in nature, and date from the days when it was irreverent and unacceptable to use the name ofGod, Jesus, or other sacred words in everyday speech. To mince your words, means to choose words so as not to offend anyone--except for God, who sees them as sacrilege (the sin of profaning sacred things).
Here are a few examples:
Bejabbers -- By Jesus By George -- By God By golly -- By God By gosh -- By God Chrissakes -- For Christ's sake Christmas -- Christ Criminy -- Christ Cripes -- Christ Dad gum -- g d Dagnabbit -- g d it Dagnammit -- g d it Dang -- Damn Darn -- Damn Darnation -- Damnation Gee whizz -- Jesus Good grief -- Good God Goodness gracious -- Good God Gosh -- God Gosh darned -- God damned Heck -- Hell Jeepers Creepers -- Jesus Christ Jeez -- Jesus Jiminy Christmas -- Jesus Christ My goodness -- My God My gosh -- My God Tarnation -- Damnation

Justification & Regeneration FREE in Different Languages
HT: Tim Challies.Charles Leiter’s book Justification & Regeneration has been available since 2007. At least, it has been available in English since 2007. More recently it has been translated into several other langauges. The author has given me permission to distribute the files.
Here is a description:
What does the Bible mean when it says that Christians have died to sin? How is it possible for a just God to justify the ungodly without becoming unjust Himself? What is regeneration? What is justification? Why do all men desperately need to be justified? If I have died to sin, why am I still affected by it? As a Christian, am I the new man or he old man or both? What does the Bible mean when it says that Christians have died to the Law? Are Christians still slaves to sin?
The answers to these and many other questions become clear once we gain a Biblical understanding of justification and regeneration. These two great miracles lie at the very heart of the gospel, yet even among genuine Christians they are surrounded by confusion and ignorance. This book attempts to set forth in clear Biblical light the nature and characteristics of justification and regeneration that God may be glorified and His children brought to know more fully the liberty that is theirs in Christ.
I also reviewed it right here.
And now, if you want it, it’s free for the taking. You can download the files for your own use or distribute them as you please. The book is available in:25 Sep 2011

Leonard Ravenhill on Cessationist Preachers
Leonard Ravenhill on Cessationist Preachers (those that believe the gifts of the Spirit ceased):
"This is the day of a restricted and relegated Holy Ghost, even in fundamentalist circles. We are loose in the use of scriptural phrases, lopsided in interpreting them, and lazy to the point of impotence in appropriating their measureless worth. Mr. Preacher will wax eloquent in speech and in spirit, serving the Lord with vigor to defend the Bible's inspiration. Yet that same man, a few breaths later with dead calmness, will be heard rationalizing that same inspired Word by outdating its miracles and by firmly declaring, "This text is not for today." Thus the new believer's faith is doused with the ice water of the preachers unbelief."

Quotes on Reaching Out to the Lost
“Those who sow in tears shall reap with joyful shouting. He who goes to and fro weeping, carrying his bag of seed, Shall indeed come again with a shout of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.” - Psalm 126:5,6
“Now the parable is this: the seed is the word of God. And those beside the road are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they may not believe and be saved. And those on the rocky soil are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no firm root; they believe for a while, and in time of temptation fall away. And the seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with worries and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity. And the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance.” Luke 8:11-15
- The great 19th century preacher Charles Spurgeon said:
“I well remember distributing them in a town in England where tracts had never been distributed before, and going from house to house, and telling in humble language the things of the kingdom of God. I might have done nothing, if I had not been encouraged by finding myself able to do something … [Tracts are] adapted to those persons who have but little power and little ability, but nevertheless, wish to do something for Christ. They have not the tongue of the eloquent, but they may have the hand of the diligent. They cannot stand and preach, but they can stand and distribute here and there these silent preachers … They may buy their thousand tracts, and these they can distribute broadcast.” - “I look upon the giving away of a religious tract as only the first step for action not to be compared with many another deed done for Christ; but were it not for the first step we might never reach to the second, but that first attained, we are encouraged to take another, and so at the last … There is a real service of Christ in the distribution of the gospel in its printed form, a service the result of which heaven alone shall disclose, and the judgment day alone discover. How many thousands have been carried to heaven instrumentally upon the wings of these tracts, none can tell …” - Charles Spurgeon
- “Let each one of us, if we have done nothing for Christ, begin to do something now. The distribution of tracts is the first thing.” - Charles Spurgeon
- “Every Christian is either a missionary or an imposter.” - Charles Spurgeon
- “Do you want arguments for soul winning? Look up to Heaven, and ask yourself how sinners can ever reach those harps of gold and learn their everlasting song, unless they have someone to tell them of Jesus, who is mighty to save. But the best argument of all is to be found in the wounds of Jesus. You want to honor Him, you desire to put many crowns upon His head, and this you can best do by winning souls for Him. These are the spoils that He covets, these are the trophies for which He fights, these are the jewels that shall be His best adornment.” - Charles Spurgeon
- “Lost! Lost! Lost! Better a whole world on fire than a soul lost! Better every star quenched and the skies a wreck than a single soul to be lost!” - Charles Spurgeon
- “I would sooner bring one sinner to Jesus Christ than unravel all the mysteries of the divine Word, for salvation is the one thing we are to live for.” - Charles Spurgeon
- “If there be any one point in which the Christian church ought to keep its fervor at a white heat, it is concerning missions. If there be anything about which we cannot tolerate lukewarmness, it is the matter of sending the gospel to a dying world.” - Charles Spurgeon
- “When preaching and private talk are not available, you need to have a tract ready….Get good striking tracts, or none at all. But a touching gospel tract may be the seed of eternal life. Therefore, do not go out without your tracts.” - Charles Spurgeon
- “To be a soul winner is the happiest thing in the world. And with every soul you bring to Jesus Christ, you seem to get a new heaven here upon earth.” - Charles Spurgeon
- “If sinners will be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our bodies. And if they will perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees, imploring them to stay. If Hell must be filled, at least let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go there unwarned and unprayed for.” - Charles Spurgeon
- “If there existed only one man or woman who did not love the Savior, and if that person lived among the wilds of Siberia, and if it were necessary that all the millions of believers on the face of the earth should journey there, and every one of them plead with him to come to Jesus before he could be converted, it would be well worth all the zeal, labor, and expense. If we had to preach to thousands year after year, and never rescued but one soul, that one soul would be full reward for all our labor, for a soul is of countless price.” - Charles Spurgeon
- I have many in this city who are my people. – Acts 18:10
“This should be a great encouragement in proclaiming the Gospel, since among the people in our communities—the disinterested, the rebellious, the careless—God has an elect people who must be saved. When you take the Word to them, you do so because God has ordained you to be the messenger of life to their souls, and they must receive it, for so the decree of predestination runs. They are as much redeemed by blood as the saints before the eternal throne. They are Christ’s property, and yet perhaps they are lovers of selfish pleasures and haters of holiness; but if Jesus Christ purchased them, He will have them. God is not unfaithful to forget the price that His Son has paid. He will not suffer His substitution to be in any case an ineffectual, dead thing. Tens of thousands of redeemed ones are not regenerated yet, but regenerated they must be; and this is our comfort when we go to them with the quickening Word of God.” - Charles Spurgeon - If We Really Love The Souls Of Men, Don’t Flatter But Prove It With Honest Speech About One’s Soul ~Charles Spurgeon
“A farmer who is too tender-hearted to tear up and harrow the land will never see a harvest. Here is the failing of certain divines, they are afraid of hurting anyone’s feelings, and so they keep clear of all the truths which are likely to excite fear or grief. They have not a sharp ploughshare on their premises, and are never likely to have a stack in their rickyard. They angle without hooks for fear of hurting the fish, and fire without bullets out of respect to the feelings of the birds. This kind of love is real cruelty to men’s souls. It is much the same as if a surgeon should permit a patient to die because he would not pain him with the lancet, or by the necessary removal of a limb. It is a terrible tenderness which leaves men to sink into hell rather than distress their minds. It is pleasant to prophesy smooth things, but woe unto the man who thus degrades himself. Is this the spirit of Christ? Did he conceal the sinner’s peril? Did he cast doubts upon the unquenchable fire and the undying worm? Did he lull souls into slumber by smooth strains of flattery? Nay, but with honest love and anxious concern he warned men of the wrathe to come, and bade them repent or perish. Let the servant of the Lord Jesus in this thing follow his Master, and plough deep with a sharp ploughshare, which will not be baulked by the hardest clods. This we must school ourselves to do. If we really love the souls of men, let us prove it by honest speech. The hard heart must be broken, or it will still refuse the Saviour who was sent to bind up the broken-hearted. There are some things which men may or may not have, and yet may be saved; but those things which go with the ploughing of the heart are indispensable; there must be a holy fear and a humble trembling before God, there must be an acknowledgment of guilt and a penitent petition for mercy; there must, in a word, be a thorough ploughing of the soul before we can expect the seed to bring forth fruit.” - Charles Spurgeon - Spurgeon on Having a Burden for the Lost:
“I remember, when I have preached at different times in the country, and sometimes here, that my whole soul has agonized over men, every nerve of my body has been strained and I could have wept my very being out of my eyes and carried my whole frame away in a flood of tears, if I could but win souls.” Spurgeon, by Arnold Dallimore - “Does it not thrill our hearts to learn that we do not go forward in our own strength. Think of it, God Himself is with us for our captain! The Lord of Hosts is present in every field of conflict, to encourage us and fight with us. With such a Leader, who never lost a battle, or deserted a soldier in distress, or failed to get through the needed supplies, who would not accept the challenge to go forward, “bearing precious seed”?”" John Stam, To Die Is Gain: The Triumph of John and Betty Stam
- “Remember also, the present is your only time to be saved. There is no believing, no repenting, no conversion in the grave—no minister will speak to you there. This is the time of conversion.”
- “Do not fear the face of man. Remember how small their anger will appear in eternity.” ~Robert Murray McCheyne (1813-1843),a godly evangelical pastor and evangelist with a great love for souls minister of St Peter’s Church Dundee (1836 – 1843)
- ”The Word of God is like a lion. You don’t have to defend a lion. All you have to do is let the lion loose, and the lion will defend itself.” - Charles Spurgeon
The Crucial Question To Test Whether One Is Truly Converted Or Lost- John Piper
...My point in this book [God is the Gospel] is that all the saving events and all the saving blessings of the gospel are means of getting obstacles out of the way so that we might know and enjoy God most fully. Propitiation, redemption, forgiveness, imputation, sanctification, liberation, healing, heaven—none of these is good news except for one reason: they bring us to God for our everlasting enjoyment of him. If we believe all these things have happened to us, but do not embrace them for the sake of getting to God, they have not happened to us. Christ did not die to forgive sinners who go on treasuring anything above seeing and savoring God. And people who would be happy in heaven if Christ were not there, will not be there. The gospel is not a way to get people to heaven; it is a way to get people to God. It’s a way of overcoming every obstacle to everlasting joy in God. If we don’t want God above all things, we have not been converted by the gospel." ~John Piper

Rejecting Christ Who Is Infinite Love Is Sin of Infinite Proportions -R. B. Kuiper
"It has been said that because of the greatness of God's love no man can perish everlastingly. That is a contradiction of the plain teaching of Scripture. It has also been said that the salvation of believers is a revelation of God's love, and the damnation of unbelievers a manifastion of God's justice. That is true enough, but it is not the whole truth. The unbeliever spurns the love of God. If this love were small, it would be a small sin to ignore it. But the fact is that this love is infinite. That makes the spurning of it a sin of infinite proportions. Precisely because the love of God is as great as it is, the unbeliever must suffer eternal punishment.
'Whosoever' believes on the Son of God will be saved - he whose sins are as scarlet or crimson (Isa. 1:18) as as he whose sins are relatively less fragrant; the murderer, the kidnapper, and the prostitute as well as the respectable citizen. None of these can be saved without faith in the Christ. All alike will be saved if they will believe on Him. Boundless love!" -R.B. Kuiper
The reason why God loves them lies not in them, but in God Himself -R.B.Kuiper
"The love of God which lies at the heart of the evangel (gospel) is sovereign. And that means that the divine love, unlike human love, is not dependent on its object. One human being, let us say, loves another. He does so because he sees something lovely in the other. And if the time should ever come that he would see nothing lovable in the other, he could not possibly continue to love him. Not so is the love of God. God loves such as are altogether dispicable and wholly repulsive. The reason why God loves them lies not in them, but in God Himself. And if the question be asked what it is in God that accounts for His love for sinners, all we can say is: 'God is love' (1 John 4:8, 16). God loves sinners because He is who He is. God loves sinful men sovereignly." -R. B. Kuiper
A Strong Faith Regards No Obstacles In Pressing After Christ -Matthew Henry
"And they brought to Him a paralytic lying on a bed. Seeing THEIR faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, "Take courage, son; your sins are forgiven." -Matt 9:2
"The faith of the friends of the paralytic in bringing him to Christ, was a strong faith; they firmly believed that Jesus Christ both could and would heal him. A strong faith regards no obstacles in pressing after Christ. It was a humble faith; they brought him to attend on Christ. It was an active faith...
...If thou bring thy sins to Jesus Christ, as thy malady and misery to be cured of, and delivered from, it is well; but to come with them, as thy darlings and delight, thinking still to retain them and receive him, is a gross mistake, a miserable delusion. The great intention of the blessed Jesus in the redemption he wrought, is to separate our hearts from sin." -Matthew Henry

Paper Missionaries and Silent Preachers: The Value of Gospel Tracts
By: Mona Leiter | www.lakeroadchapel.org
“What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?” -Mark 8:36
“Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father, but through Me.”” -John 14:6
These, and many other portions of truth from the Bible, are the message we are seeking to proclaim to the lost world around us. We communicate these life-giving truths to people by our words and by our actions. The words of men are weak and changeable, but the Word of God is powerful and lasts forever.
How can we best communicate the message of the Glorious Gospel to those around us, especially to those with whom we only come in contact briefly? The God-ordained method of proclaiming the truth of the Scriptures is preaching (1 Corinthians 1:21). Preaching would normally be in the form of a gathering of people, a Bible study, or in a conversation with someone. Tracts should help us to share words of life and truth with the lost people around us. Most of the lost world that we are seeking to reach will never enter a church building to hear the truth proclaimed through preaching from a pulpit. So, we must go to the people with the precious seed of the Gospel!
Gospel tracts, sometimes referred to as « Paper Missionaries » or « Silent Preachers », are very useful to start a conversation about God and eternity and plant a seed of the Gospel. There have been untold millions who have been reached by the message of the Gospel through this method. In my own life I discovered a gospel tract on the ground in the subway system in one of the major cities on the east coast. That gospel tract was one of many things God used to work in my life and to draw me to Himself.
A good gospel tract contains portions of Scripture and an exhortation to the reader to turn to God. The purpose of gospel tracts is not to entertain people but to stir their spirits and challenge their intellect. A tract should not give the wrong message concerning what true Christianity is all about. After all, no one can be tricked into becoming a true follower of the Lord Jesus Christ. The « new birth » is not signing your name at the end of a gospel tract or a Bible. The goal of every good gospel tract is to show the readers their need of a Savior and to point them to Christ, because one day we will all stand before a Holy God.
If we are truly burdened for those around us, then we will look for ways to reach them for Christ. It is important to be ready to share the gospel any time we are in contact with people, one-on-one or in a group. Since we are planting the seed of the gospel, we may not see many visible results immediately, but we can be certain that God is at work even when we are not aware of it or cannot actually see what He is doing in lives. Gospel tracts are a very good tool to reach students on a university campus, people at a bus stop, walking in the streets, at the bakery, cinema, newsstand, a park, beach, etc. People may read the gospel tracts at the time they receive them or sometimes even much later.
It is good to be reminded that the « Paper Missionaries » or « Silent Preachers » can go on speaking to people long after we have no further contact with them. Even if they are thrown away, someone may later pick them up and read them. The Apostle Paul said, « I might by any means save some. » If Paul had access to the printed page as we do, we can be sure that he would carry his convictions to the full. We should all carry gospel tracts with us everywhere we go and open our eyes to hundreds of opportunities before us, to either give them to an individual or simply leave them behind (phone booth, elevator, bus seat, etc.).
We are called to go and share the good news of forgiveness of sins and eternal life with those around us. It is very easy to distribute Gospel tracts; they are very effective in starting a conversation that leads into the full gospel message. We should use tracts constant and frequently… just because God can use them in lives.
When preaching and private talk are not available, you need to have a tract ready . . . Get good striking tracts, or none at all. But a touching gospel tract may be the seed of eternal life. Therefore, do not go out without your tracts.
- Charles Spurgeon

You Are Justified By Faith Not By Feelings -Charles Spurgeon
"There is a certain breed of Calvinists, whom I do not envy, who are always jeering and sneering as much as ever they can at the full assurance of faith. I have seen their long laces. I have heard their whining periods, and read their dismal sentences in which they say something to this effect—"Groan in the Lord always, and again I say, groan! He that mourneth and weepeth, he that doubteth and feareth, he that distrusteth and dishoureth his God, shall be saved." That seems to be the sum and substance of their very ungospel-like gospel. But why is it that they do this? I speak now honestly and fearlessly. It is because there is a pride within them—a conceit which is fed on rottenness, and sucks marrow and fatness out of putrid carcasses. And what, say you, is the object of their pride? Why, the pride of being able to boast of a deep experience—the pride of being a blacker, grosser and more detestable backslider than other people. "Whose glory is in their shame," may well apply to them. A more dangerous, because a more deceitful pride than this is not to be found. It has all the elements of self-righteousness in it. I would sooner a man boast in his good works than boast in his good feelings, because you can deal with the man who boasts in his good works, you have plain texts of Scripture, and you convict him of being a legalist but this other man boasts that he is no legalist he can speak very sharply against legality, he knows the truth, and yet the truth is not in him, in its spirit because still he is looking to his feelings, and not looking to the finished work of Christ. Of all the Diabolians that ever stole into the city of Mansoul, Mr. Live-by-feeling was one of the worst of villains, though he had the fairest face. Brethren, you had better live by works than live by feelings, both are damning forms of trust, but the one is more deceptive and more delusive than the other by far. You are justified by faith, not by feelings, you are saved by what Christ felt for you, not by what you feel, and the root and basis of salvation is the cross, and "other foundation shall no man lay than that which is laid," even though he place his experience there, he builds "wood, hay, and stubble," and not the corner stone, which is Christ Jesus the Lord." -Charles Spurgeon
